Between the blockbuster franchise films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home, the independent production firm A24 launched its multiversal feature picture. Compared to those comic book movies, Everything Everywhere All at Once embraced the universe in greater complexity and with greater aspiration. The multiverse movie does not fall short of Marvel in quality. With its absurdist aesthetic and message, it emphasizes this point; absurdism as a philosophy acknowledges the meaninglessness of the world while embracing existence. In other words, everything has equal significance to nothing if nothing has meaning. The movie goes out of its way to demonstrate that it is a family story with a strong personal component, rather than just a multiverse action comedy. Nearly all of the multiversal accouterments seem to be stage decorations intended to draw attention to the genuine message that what matters in life is finding joy in one’s family, love, and relationships.
In the end, this movie is a fun and original mashup of genres. If a movie is mixed with action, humor, drama, and think-pieces, its message could be lost in the mix. In conclusion, it is easy to understand what really means. Everything Everywhere All At Once by Daniels succeeds in delivering its meaning without having to say it out loud.
