The Number Of Murders Is Rising Nationwide, But Not In Camden

According to the FBI, there was a significant increase in violent crime across the country last year as a result of the sharp rise in murders. However, Camden, formerly regarded as one of the most dangerous places in America, was different. The number of killings in the city dropped to 23 in 2018 from 25 in 2019, according to data gathered by the New Jersey State Police. That is a drop of 8%. There have been 16 homicides in the city so far this year, so the trend looks to have persisted. In comparison, there were 18 deaths over the same period in 2020, an 11% decrease.

In contrast, the FBI stated on Monday that the country’s expected total of murder and negligent manslaughter offenses in 2020 increased by 29.4%.

Violent Crimes Report

According to the report, violent crimes increased 5.6 percent nationwide in 2020, marking the first such increase in four years. In contrast, Camden had a 2 percent gain. The overall result for the city showed an increase in aggravated assaults up 15% locally versus a nationwide increase of 12.1% and a rise of 6% in “non-fatal shooting hit events.”

Camden County Police Chief Gabe Rodriguez Stated:

In response to the FBI study, Camden County Police Chief Gabe Rodriguez stated, “We continue to make progress daily in the city.” That being said, he continued, “we still have a long way to go to achieve our overall objectives. “Violent crime has increased significantly across the country, and Camden is not immune from these trends. We face the same difficulties as everyone else. The city’s death toll accounted for every homicide in Camden County in 2020 except six.

Even while the city’s homicide rate decreased from 34.2 per 100,000 residents a year earlier to 31.4, it was still significantly higher than the countywide level of 5.8. Other counties in South Jersey had far lower homicide rates, with 2.5 per 100,000 people in Burlington County, 2.4 per 100,000 in Gloucester County, and 5.3 per 100,000 in Cumberland County. The FBI report noted decreases in rapes, robberies, burglaries, and larcenies on a national level. These crimes were also reduced in Camden, albeit by higher percentages. However, according to the FBI, nationwide motor vehicle thefts increased by 11.8%. In Camden, there had been a 33 percent decline for that infraction. Nationwide, property crimes decreased by 7%, and in Camden, they decreased by 24%.

According to Statistics Of Crime Victims

According to local officials, there were more than 500 fewer crime victims in 2020 than there were in 2019. For the first time in more than 50 years, the overall crime rate dropped below 3,000. That was a significant shift from years like 2013, which saw 57 murders and a total of 5,294 crimes in Camden.

According to 2013 statistics, Camden was the most dangerous city in the country, claims Neighborhood Scout, a search engine for the real estate industry.

Officials from Camden County replaced a municipal police force that had been reduced in size by layoffs with a larger county-run department in May 2013. According to Neighborhood Scout, Camden icurrently ranked ninth on its annual list of dangerous cities. Trenton ranked 38th, and Atlantic City, ranked 99th, are two other New Jersey communities on the list.
