Van Cleef and Arpels is a French-based jewelry company. A dutch diamond-cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels founded the company in 1896 in Paris. They have a very large clientele that also includes some of the most influential names in today’s world. For example, Princess of Wales, Ava Gardener, Elizabeth Taylor, and Queen Nazli of Egypt.
Van Cleef and Arpels opened boutiques in holiday resorts such as Le Touqet, Monte-Carlo, and Vichy. Their first big breakthrough came in 1925 when their bracelet with red and white roses embedded with rubies and diamonds was the grand prize at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts.
Then in 1966, Van Cleef and Arpels were given the opportunity to make the crown of Empress Farah Pahlavi for her coronation in 1967. The company even sent a team to Iran for picking out some local gems and stones for the crown to give it a native touch. The company then presented the final product comprised of 36 emeralds, 36 rubies, 105 pearls, and 1,469 diamonds. However, this wasn’t the first time Van Cleef has bestowed the opportunity to make a crown for a queen. They did the same for Queen Nazli of Egypt in the 1930s.
