Facts About The Great Lakes US

Michigan’s classic shape is carved out by four of the Great Lakes. They are, Superior, Erie, Huron and Michigan. When the Great Lakes combine, including Lake Ontario which is miles off Michigan, provide one fifth of the world’s supply of surface fresh water.

These lakes were formed thousands of years ago due to receding glaciers. So here are some facts you didn’t know about these lakes.

Lake Superior The Largest Lake In The World

Did you know that the Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world. It spans over nearly 32,000 square miles and is behind no other lake. If you combine all the water available in the other Great Lakes in Michigan, they still might not be able to compete with Lake Superior.

Provide More Than 20% Of Fresh Water To The World

If we do the math, there are about 24,000 cubic miles of fresh water available on Earth. The Great Lakes attain over 5,400 cubic miles out of that number which subsequently means they provide 20% of the fresh water that the world uses.

Lake Michigan Is The Only One Within U.S. Territory

The Great Lakes touch 8 states all across U.S. Although Michigan is the soul state that touches  four lakes – Superior, Erie, Huron and Michigan. Hence, two Canadian provinces also touch the Great Lakes but Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that doesn’t even slightly touch Canada.

The Empire State Building Would Sink In Lake Superior

The Superior Lake’s deepest point is around 1,330 ft. To put it into perspective, The Empire State Building is 1,250 ft tall from the ground. The Lake is so deep that even the tallest building in the U.S. and one of the tallest in the world would get eaten up by it.

The Michigan Triangle

There’s a particular area in Lake Michigan where unexpected circumstances have occurred multiple times. Some of those scenes have left people speechless and horrid. Similar to the Bermuda Triangle, that area is known as “The Michigan Triangle”. Unexpected occurrences such as ship disappearances and missing planes have been witnessed by the people.
